Ranchers from two continents visit Hoover Angus Farm
Twenty-four Brazilian ranchers and three U.S. officials from Genex, an artificial insemination beef genetics company, visited Hoover Angus Farm, Tingley, IA on June 23rd.  As the first stop on the group’s tour, Hoover Angus Farm displayed two of their internationally known bulls, TC Gridiron 258 and Hoover Emperor.  The group also saw progeny from two other Hoover-owned Genex sires, Basin Excitement and SA Neutron 377.

Brad Johnson, Beef Programs Administration Manager for Genex says, “The cattle from the Hoover Angus program fit ideally with the Brazilian market for performance, docility, muscle, and maternal traits.  This makes Hoover Angus a logical place for Genex CRI to procure genetics.

An interpreter bridged the gap between English and Portuguese, even though many of Brazilians spoke some English. Members of the group asked many questions about our breeding cattle philosophies, genetics, artificial insemination, management practices, climate and feedstuffs.

The Brazilians took photos of nearly every pen and group of cattle.  The three most photographed animals of the day were Hoover Emperor along with Emperor’s dam and grandam.  The group enjoyed the opportunity to see this young up-and-coming sire as well as seeing the udder quality and structure of his ancestors.

Hoovers served Certified Angus Beef® brand shredded beef as well as numerous other homemade dishes, salads, and cookies.  The buffet dinner was served from a cattle feed bunk.  Despite the challenging weather conditions of the day, good times were had by everyone!  After leaving Hoover Angus, the group will travel north through the Dakotas and then to Montana on their 10-day journey.

Then on June 24th, Hoover Angus hosted three Australian ranchers, one being the president of the breed association Angus Australia.  These ranchers were looking for genetics to introduce into their herds and their customers’ herds. Landi McFarland of Hoover Angus Farm noted, “It was a privilege and honor to host our first group from South America in the 84-year history of Hoover Angus Farm as well as having Australians that selected our herd to visit.”

These three are looking at top genetics from America. Dick has a large independent beef cattle consulting business where he selects only the best bulls for his clients to use for artificial insemination. Mark is currently serving as the president of Angus Australia, the breed association in Australia that is similar to the American Angus Association.

Basin Excitement leased to Genex!

Jon Janssen, Beef Sire Procurement Manager for Genex, visited the farm in October and was impressed to see the Excitement progeny leading the way in our 2011 calf crop. He was even more excited to learn about the bull's EPDs - low birth, high growth, combined with high marbling and ribeye ratios on his progeny. Jon requested a Pfizer 50K DNA profile be done on the bull, and shortly after results were received, Jon wanted to add Excitement to the Genex line-up as an elite calving ease sire. Excitement will be located at the Genex stud in Strafford, MO.

Advocating for Agriculture

Landi gives a presentation to the American Angus Association Board of Directors about her Young Cattlemen's Conference experience and being an advocate for agriculture. The quest of her presentation was to inspire the group to become more outspoken advocates for our industry by starting small - at the coffee shop, a Friday night football game, or dialogues on Facebook, blogs, etc.

Congratulations to Craigmore Farm of Ontario, Canada for more than doubling their money on a fall bred heifer purchased from Hoover Angus! Craigmore Farm purchased CC&7 daughter lot 158 from our February 2010 production sale for $2100 and 7 months later resold her in their sale for $4500! She had a Connealy Reward heifer calf by her side on their Labor Day sale. Wayne Kreklewich of Craigmore Farm says many visitors to his farm prior to his sale were impressed by the 9 females he selected sight-unseen from our February sale. Wayne reports that CC&7 and Hoover Dam have gained tremendous momentum in Canada in the last several months.

Embryos

Congratulations to Sandpoint Cattle Co. of Lodgepole, NE for purchasing the top selling lot of the 49th Parallel Partners in Genetics Sale - 6 frozen embryos by Erica of Ellston C124 (Hoover Dam's mother) and SydGen CC&7 for $30,000!

History: Hoover Dam's mother sold 1/2 interest in January 2010 for $45,000 to Craigmore Farm, Schomberg, Ontario. C124 raised her 2010 bull calf at Hoovers before going into embryo production. Eight months after C124 sold, 6 frozen embryos that are full sibs to Hoover Dam & Hoover Dame were auctioned by Craigmore Farm in their 49th Parallel Sale and brought in 2/3 of the price they paid for the cow!

Landi was one of 20 Angus producers selected from across the country to take part in the 2009 Beef Leaders Institute hosted by the American Angus Association in St. Joseph, Missouri. The group traveled through Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas learning about the different segments of the beef industry as part of the four-day event. First, attendees heard an overview from Association and Angus Journal staff, as well as updates from Dr. Tom Field, NCBA, and Tom Brink of the largest cattle feeding operation in the world, Five Rivers Cattle Feeding. The next day, the group toured the Tyson/IBP plant in Dakota City, and Whole Foods in Omaha. Gregory Feedlot in Tabor, Iowa was the next stop before rounding out the day with Mark Allan of Pfizer Animal Genetics speaking about genomics. The final day in Nebraska was a tour of the Cargill value added plant in Nebraska City, Sysco in Lincoln, the US Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, and Gottsch Feedyard in Red Cloud.

2008 Pathfinder Report

News article from February 21, 2008 Mount Ayr Record News

Ten of the 2,306 American Angus Association members and 86 of the 9,917 individual cows in the American Angus Association's Pathfinder Report are from Ringgold County. That's the word this week from the American Angus Association as it reports on the top cows registered with the association. Local breeders with cows in the listing include:
Hoover Angus Farm, Ellston, 41 cows
Jim & Ann Werner, Diagonal, 18 cows
Landi K. McFarland, Ellston, 10 cows
Will & Bonnie Larson, Diagonal, 7 cows
Woodland Angus LLC, Mount Ayr, 4 cows
Eric Fell, Mount Ayr, 2 cows
Russell Holmes, Benton, 1 cow
Shay Brothers, Tingley, 1 cow
Clint Werner, Diagonal, 1 cow

The Pathfinder program identifies superior Angus cows based upon recorded performance traits that are economically important to efficient beef production. These traits include early and regular calving and heavy weaning weights. More than 1.6 million eligible dams and more than 5.4 million weaning records were examined to determine Pathfinder status. All registered Angus cows that meet the strict Pathfinder standards are listed, along with their owners, in the report that is published annually by the association.

Congratulations to Eric Fell on his two Pathfinder cows: one cow sired by a Hoover bull, and one cow purchased in our 2005 production sale!

Congratulations to Shiloh Gennaro (Union County) on her Pathfinder cow purchased at Hoover Angus Farm!

Congratulations to Hawleys Gen X Angus of Arcadia, NE on their Pathfinder cow sired by H&K Black Fix S104!

The Hoover Angus Farm Family was awarded the Heritage Farm Award at the 2007 Iowa State Fair. The Heritage Farm Award is given to families which have owned the same tract of land for 150 or more consecutive years. In 1856, the ancestors of Barbara (Hoover) Kiburz homesteaded the 160 acre farm where David, Joy, and Landi McFarland currently reside. The Hoover family was the first in Union county to receive this award in the two years the award has been given.

To help our customers start using the AngusSource ® tagging program, Hoover Angus Farm is pleased to offer 20 AngusSource ® tags for each bull purchased from us in 2005 and 2006. These tags must be used for calves sired by Hoover bulls. Tags must be applied to the first calf crop of the bull purchased (Ex: for bulls purchased in 2005, tags must be applied to the bull’s calves in 2006).

Due to program and government regulations, you must purchase
the tags from the American Angus Association (tags cost $1 each),
then send Hoover Angus Farm a copy of the bill, and we will rebate up to $20.

If you choose to purchase the RFID/visual tag for $3.25 each,
Hoover Angus will still rebate $1 for up to 20 tags.

You may purchase more than 20 tags for your calf crop;
however, Hoover Angus will only rebate for 20 tags.

David and Landi McFarland travel to Certified Angus Beef ® headquarters in Ohio to learn about the brand, trends within foodservice and retail industries, how seedstock producers and feedlots can work together to provide customers with value-added marketing opportunities and much more. The Brand Builders seminar provided a wealth of knowledge to David and Landi which they hope to pass on to their customers.

Gridiron semen has recently been cleared for use in Australia! Genex representatives and others from Australia will visit the farm in late July to view Gridiron progeny.

4th generation Landi McFarland graduated from Iowa State University on May 6, 2006 with a degree in Agricultural Studies, minor in Animal Science with a 3.98 GPA. She will return to the farm to serve as the Herd Improvement Manager and help customers select breeding stock.

2006 Pathfinder Report
The following are Hoover Angus Farm cows and sires that have reached this elite distinction in the Angus breed for the current year. To earn Pathfinder status, a cow must have a regular calving interval, top performing calves reported in proper contemporary groups and must meet other specifications. For a sire to qualify, he must have five daughters earn Pathfinder status during the current year. Once a Pathfinder, always a Pathfinder; however, cows and sires might not always re-qualify for the annual report if they fail to meet one or more of the criteria.
