Congratulations to Candace Weeda on her Grand Champion Pen of 3 Steers at the 2008 Union County Fair! Candace’s steers purchased from the Hoover Angus Farm program had an average daily gain of 3.40 lbs/day, 14.4” ribeye, 7.43% IMF (two high choice steers, one choice), and an average yield grade of 2.6. The carcass value added per day on feed was $3.516, over $.50 more than the next highest pen of steers. 2008 Pathfinder Report

News article from February 21, 2008 Mount Ayr Record News

Ten of the 2,306 American Angus Association members and 86 of the 9,917 individual cows in the American Angus Association's Pathfinder Report are from Ringgold County. That's the word this week from the American Angus Association as it reports on the top cows registered with the association. Local breeders with cows in the listing include:
Hoover Angus Farm, Ellston, 41 cows
Jim & Ann Werner, Diagonal, 18 cows
Landi K. McFarland, Ellston, 10 cows
Will & Bonnie Larson, Diagonal, 7 cows
Woodland Angus LLC, Mount Ayr, 4 cows
Eric Fell, Mount Ayr, 2 cows
Russell Holmes, Benton, 1 cow
Shay Brothers, Tingley, 1 cow
Clint Werner, Diagonal, 1 cow

The Pathfinder program identifies superior Angus cows based upon recorded performance traits that are economically important to efficient beef production. These traits include early and regular calving and heavy weaning weights. More than 1.6 million eligible dams and more than 5.4 million weaning records were examined to determine Pathfinder status. All registered Angus cows that meet the strict Pathfinder standards are listed, along with their owners, in the report that is published annually by the association.

Congratulations to Eric Fell on his two Pathfinder cows: one cow sired by a Hoover bull, and one cow purchased in our 2005 production sale!

Congratulations to Shiloh Gennaro (Union County) on her Pathfinder cow purchased at Hoover Angus Farm!

Congratulations to Hawleys Gen X Angus of Arcadia, NE on their Pathfinder cow sired by H&K Black Fix S104!

The Hoover Angus Farm Family was awarded the Heritage Farm Award at the 2007 Iowa State Fair. The Heritage Farm Award is given to families which have owned the same tract of land for 150 or more consecutive years. In 1856, the ancestors of Barbara (Hoover) Kiburz homesteaded the 160 acre farm where David, Joy, and Landi McFarland currently reside. The Hoover family was the first in Union county to receive this award in the two years the award has been given.

Pictured below from left are: Craig Lang, Iowa Farm Bureau President, Landi McFarland, Joy McFarland, Barbara Kiburz, John Kiburz, Judy Harrison, and Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.

To help our customers start using the AngusSource ® tagging program, Hoover Angus Farm is pleased to offer 20 AngusSource ® tags for each bull purchased from us in 2005 and 2006. These tags must be used for calves sired by Hoover bulls. Tags must be applied to the first calf crop of the bull purchased (Ex: for bulls purchased in 2005, tags must be applied to the bull’s calves in 2006).

Due to program and government regulations, you must purchase
the tags from the American Angus Association (tags cost $1 each),
then send Hoover Angus Farm a copy of the bill, and we will rebate up to $20.

If you choose to purchase the RFID/visual tag for $3.25 each,
Hoover Angus will still rebate $1 for up to 20 tags.

You may purchase more than 20 tags for your calf crop;
however, Hoover Angus will only rebate for 20 tags.

David and Landi McFarland travel to Certified Angus Beef ® headquarters in Ohio to learn about the brand, trends within foodservice and retail industries, how seedstock producers and feedlots can work together to provide customers with value-added marketing opportunities and much more. The Brand Builders seminar provided a wealth of knowledge to David and Landi which they hope to pass on to their customers.

Gridiron semen has recently been cleared for use in Australia! Genex representatives and others from Australia will visit the farm in late July to view Gridiron progeny.

4th generation Landi McFarland graduated from Iowa State University on May 6, 2006 with a degree in Agricultural Studies, minor in Animal Science with a 3.98 GPA. She will return to the farm to serve as the Herd Improvement Manager and help customers select breeding stock.

2006 Pathfinder Report
The following are Hoover Angus Farm cows and sires that have reached this elite distinction in the Angus breed for the current year. To earn Pathfinder status, a cow must have a regular calving interval, top performing calves reported in proper contemporary groups and must meet other specifications. For a sire to qualify, he must have five daughters earn Pathfinder status during the current year. Once a Pathfinder, always a Pathfinder; however, cows and sires might not always re-qualify for the annual report if they fail to meet one or more of the criteria.
